The 3rd BIOSIRE Consortium Meeting as well as the first International Workshop of the BIOSIRE project took place in Heraklion (Crete) on 14th and 15th September 2009. The Region of Crete - Regional Energy Agency of Crete hosted the events.

On the 14th of September 2009 the 1st International BIOSIRE Workshop was held in Crete. The workshop addressed the theme of the collection of used vegetable oils around Europe. The five case studies presented reflected a variety of aspects related to oil collection: business model and business chain, institutional framework and legislative obstacles/incentives, collection methods and approaches to target group involvement.

The BIOSIRE International Workshop activities continue, as the 2nd workshop was successfully concluded in Zagreb (Croatia) on February 17th and 18th. This time, the focus was on Technical Aspects of Biofuels Use in Fleets. The audience included representatives from local institutions, fuel producers and universities, along with the Biosire partners, providing a lively and stimulating discussion.

The BIOSIRE Thematic Transfer Activities aim to engage a dialogue with additional European regions - especially from New Member States - interested in promoting the use of alternative fuel and clean vehicles in tourist areas. The opportunity to join the BIOSIRE project as a New Transfer Region is open to public and private bodies.

The BIOSIRE website provides a section bringing tourists and sustainable tourist regions together. The subsection includes a map on which tourists have the possibility to gain an overview about tourism regions caring for sustainability in the transport sector.

The local partners CINESI, CTM and GEN organised two different thematic workshops, which took place on the 4th of February in Palma. These events were planned in the Market Transformation Plan, the document which addresses the local implementation strategy of the BIOSIRE project.

From May 2009, two new boats - replacing former diesel-powered vessels - have been operating in La Rochelle between the Old Harbour and the Marina. “Copernic” and “Galilée” are electric boats - and even electro-solar boats: the roof of the boats has been equipped with photovoltaic panels, which provide more than 20% of the energy required.

The Region of Crete - Regional Energy Agency of Crete (REAC) has finalized the big promotional campaign for the collection of used cooking oils. Around 130.000 leaflets have been distributed to households, restaurants, hotels, companies, industries etc. The campaign has been implemented in cooperation with the Cretan Municipalities.

Electric propulsion - from bicycles to vehicles
The local actions for Austria mainly involve the dissemination of electric propelled vehicle implementation for tourism regions and the implementation of vehicles propelled with biodiesel.
Within the last months an agreement with the operator of trishaws in the city of Graz has been achieved. A major expansion of the system is planned for 2010.

After a series of meetings between UniZag-FSB and local key actors, the 2nd and 3rd local workshops have been successfully implemented in Croatia. The 2nd local workshop was held in the City of Dubrovnik as a side event of the 5th Dubrovnik Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems. Participants at this workshop were mainly guests from the conference and local and regional experts in the field of biofuels and Renewable Energy Sources.

Veneto Region is analyzing the implementation methodology of potential transition from fossil energies to bio fuels in fleets for the city of Venice. The main objective of the work is to find out which limits and possible solutions exist, to sustain the implementation of this kind of market in Venice and in its lagoon.
The municipality registers about 8 million presences each year and this makes Venice an important location to introduce sustainable initiatives to the attention of a great public especially to tourist. In this way each project in this area could lead to a great redundancy and have a flywheel effect on spreading other similar initiatives and sustainable behaviours.
